Could peroxiredoxins and other biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation represent the link between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and asthma?

The aim of the PNRR project (PNRR-POC-2022-12376842, “Role of Peroxiredoxin-6 as a New Insulin and GLP-1 Secretagogue Agent and Peroxiredoxins as a Common Link in Type 2 Diabetes, COPD, and Asthma” – PNRR-M6C2.2 PNRR-M6C2.2 Investimento 2.1: Valorizzazione e potenziamento della ricerca biomedica del SSN) is to:
● Explore the role of PRDX6 as a potential secretagogue for insulin and GLP-1;
● Identify new biomarkers associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Asthma;
● Investigate the role of oxidative stress as an indicator of disease severity.

Our mission

To explore the role of PRDX6 as a potential secretagogue for insulin and GLP-1, and to identify novel biomarkers linking three major global diseases — Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Asthma — while elucidating their shared pathophysiological mechanisms.
We also aim to investigate oxidative stress as an indicator of disease severity. Understanding these shared mechanisms could lead to new therapies that protect diabetic patients from lung disease.

Our network

The PULSE project unites the expertise of one leading Italian university and two university hospitals in a close collaborative effort to accelerate the identification of new biomarkers linked to type 2 diabetes, asthma, and COPD, and to explore the role of PRDX6 as a potential secretagogue for insulin and GLP-1. By combining strengths in endocrinology, pulmonology, and clinical pathology, the research groups ensure a coordinated and translational approach to biomarker discovery, bridging scientific insights with clinical application.
